About Popa Taungkalat Wildlife Sanctuary

Popa Taungkalat Wildlife Sanctuary

Popa Taungkalat Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses the area surrounding Mount Popa, an extinct volcanic mountain rising 1,518 meters above sea level, located in Myanmar’s Mandalay Region. The sanctuary protects a variety of dry forest ecosystems characteristic of the central dry zone, supporting an abundance of flora including deciduous trees and shrubs, as well as fauna such as the endangered Burmese star tortoise, various birds, reptiles, and mammals including monkeys and civets. The area is famous for the volcanic plug called Taung Kalat monastery atop a rocky outcrop, which draws many pilgrims annually for its religious significance tied to nat (spirit) worship. Outdoor visitors can explore hiking trails that lead to the summit providing panoramic views of the surrounding plain and the sanctuary’s forests. Birdwatching is a popular activity due to the rich avian diversity. The sanctuary is managed to conserve its unique biodiversity and cultural heritage while accommodating sustainable tourism. Visitors benefit from the blend of natural beauty, spiritual landmarks, and opportunities for wildlife observation. The sanctuary’s volcanic landscape and forested slopes create a distinctive habitat different from much of Myanmar’s lowland areas, contributing to its ecological importance.
